Jan Lower is the author of non-fiction picture books and fiction for middle-grade readers. A Song for the Cosmos: Blind Willie Johnson and Voyager’s Golden Record is a 2023 Bank Street Best Children’s Book of the Year, and The Brilliant Calculator: How Mathematician Edith Clarke Helped Electrify America is a Junior Library Guild Selection, an NSTA/CBC Best Stem Book, a RISE Feminist Book Project Recommended Title, a Mathical Honor Book, and a 2024 Bank Street Best Children’s Book of the Year. A Heart on Fire: Quaker Benjamin Lay’s Fight for Equality in Colonial America arrives in 2026. Her prize-winning writing for and about adolescents can be found in Hunger Mountain Journal of the Arts, The Wax Paper Literary Magazine, and The ALAN Review. A former lawyer, Jan lives in Bethesda, Maryland, with her family.
