R.J. Owens has engaged in a variety of writing, as a community storyteller in a journalism program with the Oakland Tribune; as a retail advertising copywriter, forced into economical writing by strict line and character limits; and as an attorney translating legalese into understandable English for a legal treatise.
As a children’s author, R.J.’s debut picture book, A Song So Black, So Proud!, was released by Sleeping Bear Press in 2023. R.J. currently has three other picture books in the pipeline: Walk the Walk (Bloomsbury), Cowgirl Dreaming (Abrams), and Sunshine’s Coming Through (Kokila).
