Carolyn DeCristofano

Carolyn began writing books for kids when she was a museum-based educator for Boston’s Museum of Science (MOSB). Her rhyming book, Leonardo’s ABC (MOSB, 1997), accompanied an exhibit on Leonardo da Vinci, and connected da Vinci’s curiosity to young readers’ interests. Later, her work on a cosmology exhibit for the Harvard Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics led to Big Bang! The Tongue-Tickling Tale of a Speck that Became Spectacular (Charlesbridge, 2005), which was recommended by the National Science Teachers Association, named a 2005 Best Book by the American Association for the Advancement of Science, and a 2005 IRA Notable Book. The inspiration for A Black Hole is NOT a Hole (Charlesbridge, 2012), did NOT come from exhibit work. This book received broad acclaim, including recognition from the NCTE Orbis Pictus Committee and an ALA Notable.

Other books include work for HarperCollins Let’s Read and Find Out series, The Sun and the Moon and Running on Sunshine, as well as an update to Franklyn M. Branley’s What Makes a Magnet? She collaborated closely with her husband to create National Geographic Kids Ultimate Space Atlas.

Carolyn’s author visits are energetic, interactive experiences informed by more than three decades as a science/STEM educator and curriculum developer. Additionally, she is President and lead consultant for Blue Heron STEM Education, and she recently retired from another STEM education consulting firm that she co-founded. She lives not far from Boston in a 160-year-old farmhouse with her muse/engineer and amateur astronomer/husband, Barry, and the cats that weave in and out of their lives.
