Silvia Lopez

Silvia Lopez arrived in Miami from Cuba with one suitcase and no English.  Eight years later she was an English literature major in college.  But then she took the “kiddie lit” class (hate that name!) for her library degree and found her true love.  She feels that just about everything she ever needed to know in life she’s learned in a children’s book.

After years of sharing her delight in a good story with hundreds of kids she decided to set her own creations down on paper.  She’s written picture books ranging from funny to serious to tall tales to original folktales to retellings (philosophy: a good book is a good book no matter the topic.) She’s also training to become a bilingual narrator and voice-over actor for audio books.

For four years she served on the Sunshine State Young Readers Award selection committee, loving every minute of the task of reading over three hundred books a year.  She’s a member of SCBWI’s Florida chapter and critique groups, an invaluable support.

She still lives in Miami where she and her husband have raised three children and rescued too many dogs and cats to count.
